The Kuressaare beach area is located in the southern part of the city of Kuressaare in the municipality of Saaremaa, by the Tori Bay. The area is surrounded by Kuressaare Castle, residential area, stadium, spa and hotels. In terms of urban planning, the planning area is oriented to the southwest, the central city is located to the north of the area.

The recreation area of Kuressaare is generally known as a fairly open and close-to-nature landscape with a view of the city's attractions. Individual sitting benches have been installed on the shores of the bay, and low shrubbery and tall greenery have been built as a wind barrier. In terms of usability, the area is generally zoned into two, the western and northern shores of Tori cove are more active among tourists, where large-scale spa hotels are located, and the shore of Ujula cove is mostly used by city residents.

Considering the connection of the plot with the sea and the immediate proximity of the old town and the strong connection with the fortress, the beach area has a strong potential. To a large extent, the originality of the place has been preserved thanks to keeping it free from car traffic and sparse buildings, which preserve the existing public space on a more human scale. The area is quite spacious, but with good accessibility and connection to other parts of the city.

Concept

The concept of this project solution is based on the principles of a calm and modern beach area. As far as possible, the existing raised landscaping, which is in good condition, has been preserved. Coziness and privacy are ensured by the slopes, which also hold back the sea breeze. In addition to the changes in the natural landscape, underground lighting is planned for the area, which ensures security and the aforementioned coziness of the area.

The beach building is joined by a terrace extension, where everyone can sit in the shade but in the fresh air. The extension of the terrace continues along the beach, finally reaching the viewing platform, which does not prevent bathers from entering the water. The viewing platform offers a view of both the sea and the castle.  More roads have been built in the area to allow comfortable traffic for cyclists and between pedestrians, excluding collisions. As a result, it has also been designed for the wet bike racks resistant to conditions. The materials used are mostly wood and metal, less glass.

The area can be used all year round with activities in both summer and winter, for every user group.
